PHOTO COURTESY OF CELIA MILTONCelia Milton of North Haledon considers her career as a full-time, freelance non-denominational wedding officiant, “the best calling on the planet.”

Milton has been a freelance wedding officiant for six years. She is also a wedding pastor and a motivational speaker.

“The way I approach a wedding ceremony is not like a minister or a rabbi. I start with a story, not a sermon,” said Celia. “I create an atmosphere of excitement, of introspection and discovery.”

She performs weddings and civil unions throughout New Jersey and New York. She follows the Unitarian Universalist tradition, and completed her Masters at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. She also studied at Fordham University in New York and at the Celebrant USA Foundation in Montclair.

“People often view weddings as something to sit through. My ceremonies are completely couple-driven. It’s all about them. It’s just like the bride and groom, only on a really important day,” she said.

In her ceremonies, Milton honors each couple’s ethic, spiritual and religious traditions. She helps each couple express their personalities and unique stories.
